  Rans S-6 Panel

Probably the most fun in building an airplane is planning the instrument panel. It can be fairly simple and inexpensive or it can be almost as complex and expensive as your time and budget will allow. The first panel I designed for my S-6S was fairly simple and inexpensive...

There are a lot of choices to consider...

Flight Instruments
How much money do I want to spend? Old style round flight instruments are a lot less expensive than the new EFIS screens. But they are just not as cool! I originally ruled out the EFIS but have since decided that I want one enough to make it worth the extra cost. I will install a Dynon D-100.

GPS
At Oshkosh 2008 I almost bought the new AV8OR from Bendix/King. It's small and comes with an auto database so it can be used in the plane or car. I can't see myself ever wanting to transfer it from the plane to car...and it does have a relatively small screen. I have now decided upon the AvMap GeoPilot for it's larger screen (shown in the pic above).

Engine Monitor
This was never really a question for me. I had the GRT digital E.I.S. in my S-10 and loved it! You never have to monitor the engine. If anything goes outside a user selected parameter, the E.I.S. lights up a bright red caution light. I bought my E.I.S. from Sta-Lite Aviation.

Transponder
I wasn't even going to install a transponder but have decided it's best to install one now as it will be a lot easier to install one now while I'm cutting the panel instead of waiting until later. I want the least expensive transponder I can buy so I will most likely install the Narco AT 165 Value Series.

What Else?
The other thing I want on this airplane is a fuel flow monitor. Although the GRT E.I.S. does have a fuel flow add on, I decided I wanted the fuel flow from Flight Data Systems.

So what's it all look like now? Here it is...

I will most likely fabricate a map box below the engine monitor.
