I
have a GoPro HD camera I bought to capture some interesting flight video from my
RANS S-6S. The camera includes a few different types of mounts, but none of them
seemed to work well in the airplane so the camera sat unused. Then I found the
wing strut mount from AeroVideo.net. They
design and sell very nice high quality camera mounts and offer several options
for different cameras and different airplanes.
When they designed a mount specifically to fit the RANS wing strut, I had to have one! I installed the mount on the left wing strut and found that it fit the RANS strut perfectly. The mount is made from Polyurethane Elastomer and weighs about 1 pound. Both the front and back pieces of the mount come standard with a black foam that serves a dual purpose of protecting the finish on your strut while also providing high-frequency vibration protection.
When I received the mount I was initially concerned about the wing nuts vibrating loose and the mount sliding down the strut and scratching the finish. I expressed my concern to Bill at Aero Video and he actually went out and tested this to see if it was possible. It's not. With the design of the mount, even if by chance the wingnuts did come loose, the lock pins at the rear of the threaded rod prevent the mount from becoming too loose as to let any metal touch the strut.
So
how does this mount work? Well...awesomely! It took me all of about 20 second to
actually secure the mount to the strut. When I ordered my mount, I ordered it
with the optional GoPro adapter. This fit perfectly with my camera and the
camera was secured to the mount. The AerVideo mount does not have to be
tightened super
tight. I tightened it just enough to slightly compress the black foam and
so far I have flown three flights with the mount on the strut and it is just as
secure now as it was when I first installed it. I no longer have any concern
about the wingnuts coming loose. This mount really works nicely.
One of the thing I like about this mount is that by it's design, I can point the camera up, down, left, forward, backwards, or any other direction I want. It's small, light, and very easy to use. Filming video is a great way to add fun and excitement to your flying. With the AeroVideo mount, I found making video fun and easy and I'm starting to experiment with different camera angles to create some exciting video.
