I've been thinking about doing this for a while. This aluminum sheet is the side piece of the glare-shield. The holes shown here are on the bottom and they get riveted to small tabs that are welded to the airframe. Because of the weld on the tabs, the aluminum can not sit flush with the fuselage because the welds 'push' the aluminum out. (this probably makes no sense to you if you are not familiar with the S-6!)

Anyway, I cut these slots above the rivet holes for the weld to protrude through. I did it the old fashion way with a drill and a file. It might make more sense if you look at the next pic...

Can you see here how if the slot was not there for the weld to stick out, the weld would prevent the aluminum from sitting flush?
This is the overflow drain for the coolant mounted on the bottom of the firewall.
