Today I started working on the rudder. First thing I did was rivet on two nutplanes (one shown below)
In the above photo, I riveted on the top cap to the rudder. See the three rivets on the top? These parts fit together so nice!
This is the bottom of the rudder. These pieces are for the rudder cables and the tailwheel springs/cables. Building this is tough. It's plenty beefy, but the builder has to align the metal control horns and drill through each side. The control horns are about 1/4" away from the tube (plastic washers fill the gap). There is no way to drill through the horn, through the tube, and then do the same thing on the other side and have all the holes line up. One hole was off enough that I had to keep filing it open more and more until I just drilled it out with a 1/4" bit and used a larger bolt. These holes should be pre-punched from the factory (which may impossible to do because it's separate tubes.) Anyway, it's very challenging to get all the holes to line up properly.
The rear bolt (the one to the left on the picture) is the 1/4" bolt I used instead of the 3/16". All this comes off again for covering. I'll also paint all the control horns. That's it...rudder conplete!
